Mathew Pillans' rise was shaped by more than talent alone. Growing up in Pretoria and progressing through the HPC Academy and Tuks First XI, he credits coach Pierre de Bruyn for elevating his game—combining world-class technical coaching with a rare ability to understand and manage players. With Pierre's influence, Mat emerged as a bowler known for raw pace and steep bounce.

His performances for the Dolphins franchise caught the eye of English scouts, launching a decade-long career in the UK. From the historic oval at Surrey to the gritty competition of Yorkshire and Leicestershire, Mat didn't just play the game—he studied it.
